I think these might run more on the blackish mark, but if it's a real dark black it would indicate it is running rich which could explain the back fire. Definately shouldn't be wet (sign of plug fouling). As for the filter.

just pull the carb loose and take the bowl off and clean the jet and ports out using air or carb cleaner, it doesn't take much to plug the main jet. A grain of sand will drive you crazy. I have a fuel filter on my fuel line and I will get fuel for about five minutes and then I will stop getting fuel to my filter. I can take my cap off of my tank and remove the hose clamp and take off my fuel line behind the filter and still no fuel.It makes for planned obsolesence for the fuel pump. As soon as the filter sock on the bottom of the pump gets completely full, fuel flow gets decreased, causing higher amperage draw on the pump trying to get the fuel flow needed to supply the engine, eventually burning it up. After refilling it would run fine except at Full throttle where it would misfire and almost die. If you would let it idle for a little bit, it would catchup and run fine again except at WOT.

hahah yup that what i do ..but i'm guessing i get any were from 65-100 miles a tank i've never paid attention really i can usually ride 3-4 hrs every time i ride and i can do that 3-4 times before i'm empty or on last bar. 2011 Honda foreman 500. : 3,200 miles and counting. : K&N air filter.HELP! foreman 500 dies when hit throttle. so I have a 2008 foreman 500 and it idled but would die when you hit the throttle. If theres junk in the tank the best way is the way rich said, you can rinse it more once its drained.
