With the redesign, it seems a reactor becomes tailored to a very specific combination of fuels. So it forces you to rebuild it each time you change fuels, or build a whole array (a single reactor isn't cheap at it is). It may be possible to create a reactor with multiple fuels which breeds its own supply, but that's another complexity layer. The heat can't be extracted and the only function it has is to make your reactor explode if it gets too hot. The molten salt fission reactors, on the other hand, create steam that can be used in any kind of steam-powered generator.
