We recently had a cold snap here in Texas and my 2013 Duramax check engine light came on with this code. After I had the EGR valve replaced and took it in and they replaced the NOX 1 sensor. two days later the CEL came back on and they ran tests and found the NOX 2 sensor and the EGR bypass cooler was also shot. It has been at the dealer for two days getting fixed.

Often times this isn't related to the EGR but instead the MAF sensor (mass air flow). Also, a restriction in the air inlet tubes can be an issue as well. Remove the MAF sensor (see pic 1 below) and inspect it for dirt. I would service it and see if that makes a difference.
