My '96 Outback would auto lock all the doors as the car started rolling, and pulling on the driver's door handle would unlock only the driver's door to exit. When you pull the door panel off, you have the two cables. One the lock, the other the door handle. Make sure they are fully seated/snapped into the bracket holding them and the ball end is in the socket.
